HÓQUEI EM CAMPOTORNEIO INTERNACIONAL VETERANOSSÁBADO 17 de FEVEREIRO de 2007 Wider still and wider – no, not a reference to their waist bands, but to the extending influence of the Evergreens’ social brand of hockey. Following a detailed fact-finding tour last season by Chef D’Equipe Peter Hollebon, Team Manager Fred Matthews and Tour Tart Nigel King, the 20-man squad fly into Porto on Thursday morning for a two-day period of acclimatisation before embarking on a strenuous weekend’s hockey. Saturday, for those that survive the rigourous pre-tournament schedule, sees a round-robin series of matches, 20 minutes each way, starting at 10.00 a.m. Each team plays four games and the Essex side are fortunate to play the first and last games spread over a nine-hour schedule. Whether anyone is still standing at the final game most probably depends on a number of factors, most too sensitive to mention in a family publication. In addition to three local teams, the opposition includes old friends and sparring partners, Zevenbergen from Holland. On Sunday, the Evergreens play a full length game against host club, Ramaldense, before heading off to the coast to rest weary muscles, exercise gullets and enjoy some of the marine specialities of the region. Security at Stansted Airport is braced for the squad’s return at 11.35 p.m. – given their likely state, the authorities have drafted in two retired grandmothers and a mop to deal with any problems. A team photo of the early morning team meeting at Stansted (children and people of a nervous disposition are advised to look away) will be e-mailed on Thursday morning and a full report (subject to tour rules) and photographs of the weekend’s events will be published after the team’s return. The tournament schedule is as follows:
