On Sunday 6th November, we played against a well drilled Crostyx side at the Olympic Park on the main pitch. For most players this is a dream come true due to all the international players that have played on that same pitch. The opposition arrived with many stand out players, who took control of the first half for Crostyx by running their midfield and creating many chances – they brought their dragflicker (a high pack County player) and other JAC County players. The Chelmsford side turned up with several of their usual players missing due to other sporting commitments, so were very grateful for the help of Tom Ebden, James McBurney and Matthew Gilbert who have all stepped up from the U14s. We used a 4-4-2 diamond midfield formation in the match which worked well. The team was set out with these positons; Tom Pegrum (GK), Theo Wheadon (LB), Charlie Robinson (Sweeper/CB), Archie Mountier (CB), Ben McSweeney (RB), James McBurney and Matthew Gilbert (RM/LM), Justin Ross (RM/LM), Tom Gore (CF), Ben Middleton (CM), Oliver Middleton (LF), Tom Ebden (RF). The match started with a good tempo as Chelmsford created some great chances in the opening minutes of the match, produced through an exhibition of great passing and movement off the ball. Crostyx then found their selves with a short corner which sadly they scored from. Crostyx dominated the first half, scoring a second goal from yet another short corner. However, towards the end of the first half Chelmsford held them to 2-0 until half time. A special mention to Tom Pegrum who denied the dragflicker any further chances of scoring. Luckily, it was a game of two halves! After having a team talk in the dug outs we came out with determination and a great game plan. Chelmsford found their form and were putting the Crostyx side under immense pressure. In quick succession we found ourselves bringing back the score line to 2-2, with two great goals from Ben Middleton and Tom Gore, both on the reverse hand shot. Crostyx had their heads down and with a bad stick tackle one of their players was off with a 2 minute suspension due to a green card. We took full advantage and quickly got a short corner. Tom Gore with a drag flick into the bottom corner secured a 3rd goal. 3-2 Chelmsford. After the suspended player returned onto the pitch, Crostyx very quickly achieved a short corner, scoring to make the score 3-3. After a hard fought half Crostyx broke through and were one-on-one with our Goal keeper, who made a fantastic save, however our relief was short lived as they scored a flukey goal, making the score 4-3 to Crostyx. Chelmsford were determined to get another goal and pushed up and put Crostyx under pressure once again. It was a very intense half but the score remained at 4-3 to Crostyx. Special mentions to Archie Mountier who achieved Man of The Match, closely followed by Charlie Robinson; however everyone put in a huge amount of effort for which we should be proud.
